BioOne of my earliest experiences is of being told that dolphins can't fly. I turned to my legal guardian and said "Oh, Gloria, how can this be? How can this poisonous rumour be truth?" And so I dove headfirst into the sea, grabbed the nearest baby dolphin I could find and ran up North Dakota's highest precipice. Standing amidst the sharp breeze and anguished cries of the squirming dolphin, my heartbeat pleaded with the gods; Oh God, if such a claim can be true -- if such a beautiful creature can't fly -- then what am I to do, but submit myself to a life of drudgery and arbitrary rules? I flung the dolphin far over Gobi desert from my cliff, and watched it plummet, hitting the ground so gently I could almost believe it had survived. If only those intestinal juices hadn't exploded in an arc of acid over the desolate landscape, that supple flesh submitting to the harsh realities of the stone-baked ground. Oh, if only. If only.
And so I decided to study mathematics.
